AOL just launched In2TV, a service that is supposed to allow you to watch TV on demand, online. I say "supposed to" because I can't get it to work. If I try to watch a show, the player appears, it plays the first ad fine, then... nothing. I also tried to download the "Hi-Q" version of the episode, which uses a Bittorrent clone to fetch DRM'd videos. When I go to play it, I get the message: "We apologize, this content must be played in the AOL video player." Of course, I am using the AOL video player. Bastards.

So, someone on #hackcanada posts a news article about this supposed new "powdered alcohol" drink, subyou. I'm pretty skeptical of the ability of alcohol to be powdered, due to its low freezing and melting point. The site linked above has a short explanation, but it's light on details, references or patent numbers. A search for "powdered alcohol" and "maltodextrin" only comes up with 12 sites, and they all repeat the same information. I'm not impressed by the fact that everyone is reacting to this without actually investigating it. So, I'm launching my own investigation. I'm going to buy some, take it to the chem lab, and see how much alcohol is really in it. But, I need cash. So I'm summoning the power of my friends list! My new Xbox VGA cable is working! I made it using the guides at xbox-linux.org and xbox-scene.com. The picture looks awesome, thanks to the high quality VGA cable I used to make it. No ghosting at all! I got some help and parts from the electronics guys at the university, and an Xbox video connector from a fellow Xbox enthusiast here in town.

There are still a few things I have left to do. Knights of the Old Republic seems to like to turn green randomly, and I need to set up higher resolution modes for XFree86. Also, the audio cables need to be added to the adapter. The Xbox brings all video and audio signals out on one connector.

Wow, I just had the coolest bit of luck. I got home and discovered a note from Purolator on my door, indicating that my Xbox hard drive had shown up, and that it was available for pickup... in Truro.

I was pissed off, because I have no car, and it wouldn't be worth it to make a trip to Truro just to get the damn thing. Then I remembered that I'm going to Halifax to visit the_p0pe and silver_violet on Friday, which of course involves passing through Truro.

So, I figured, I'll take a bus to Truro, take a taxi to the Purolator depot and back, and take the next bus to Halifax.

Then I remembered I had talked to my friend Aaron last night for the first time in months. He used to work at Convergys in New Glasgow with me, but has moved back to Truro. He told me last night that I should give him a call if I was ever in Truro.

So, I called him, and not only will he be around, he'll probably be able to borrow his mother's car! So, no taxi fees!

This is all coming together very nicely. Eeeeexcellent.

My brother was trying to get an adapter that would connect his old charger with a standard barrel connector to his Motorola/Nextel phone, which has a proprietary connector. He got the guy at the local RadioShack to help him find one. When he brought it home, he found it had a 1/8 inch phono plug, so he called me and got me to help him. He'd already been trying to hook up wires from his old charger to the input, and had been connecting them in every possible combination. He told me that there were 4 connectors on the phone - tip, two rings, and a mystery connector. I deduced that the mystery connector might be the wire that disconnects some part of the circuit when you plug the connector in. We figured this out by cutting up an unused headset and plugging it in, and measuring the resistace between tip and this mystery connector. Sure enough, it went from a short to a relatively high resistance. This seemed a strange thing to have in a charger, so I asked my brother to find the package and read it to me. By finding out what it was supposed to adapt from and to, I would look up the pinouts of these devices and figure out where power connections were really supposed to go. Here's what he read to me:

"Nextel compatible audio adapter for Nextel wireless phones. Enables you to use any headset with a 2.5mm connector."

After he read this, he didn't notice the problem at all. I had to tell him "Hey, this isn't a power adapter. You probably just ruined your phone by hooking power up to it." He screamed in frustration for a minute straight.
